Little-Pet Care
Preventative health care will save your rodent-pets unnecessary distress. It is important that mice, rats, hamsters and other small pets be examined and their diet and husbandry be reassessed by your vet annually. During your pet’s annual exam include how long you’ve owned your pet; where it was bought; other pets in the house; cage materials and its hygiene; diet; medication use (if any); behavioural changes. Take note of what your vet mentions as his expertise shouldn’t be taken for granted. By providing your vet with as much information as possible and having your pet examined frequently you can help it to maintain good health. It is important, as a pet owner, not to feel ‘silly’ walking into the vet holding your little rodent. They require (and are entitled to) the same kind of care that we would give to our dogs and cats. Some vets have a special interest in small mammals and will appreciate the visit.

Tick Disposal
There are numerous ways in which to ensure that your pet is tick free, one of the ways where pet assistance is needed is to check his fur daily. This is an easy inspection as ticks are rather bulbous and easily spotted. When found it is common believe that the ticks should be burned out, but the animals seem to scare easily when a flame approaches them. Thus taking a tweezer and plucking the tick out is another option. Even if the head remains in the body, the tick dies and eventually falls out. To dispose of the body, dead or alive, either burn it, flush it or crush it.

DARG CALL FOR ASSISTANCE
Dog lovers in the Cape Town area will be pleased to hear that a local Hout Bay pooch was rescued this week by the friendly DARG team and Penzance Vet clinic. Please read the following story and see if you can contribute in any way to Buksie's case!

This old boy was attacked by a a group of dogs. His owner, who lives in Imizamu Yethu, rushed him to DARG on a Sunday afternoon.
He was soaked, bloodied, freezing and in shock. Jenny, the nurse, was quick to warm him up with the water bottle (donated by the kind public!) and then rushed him to Penzance Vet (they were closed so the vet on standby was kind enough to come in).
Buksie was operated on right there and then. He had 17 puncture wounds, 2 of which were in the lungs! We’re happy to say that Buksie survived and was able to go home with his very grateful owner who managed to contribute, very proudly, R100 towards his bill. While that was a great help, it still leaves an outstanding R600 to pay!
If you can help by donating towards Buksie’s vet bill, please contact us! (Ask for Jenny at 021 7900383) Also, check out DARG's great new website at www.darg.org.za

Missing puppy? get some pet assistance now!
The worst nightmare for any pet owner is the sudden heart wrenching discovery that your pet is missing! After a few seconds of hopeful denial and heart pounding we will tend to check around inconceivable corners and under sofas and beds and all around the home or garden but after some increasingly loud calling there may come a time when our pets have indeed just gotten away from our sight and protection. Pet assistance in this particular time is something that is absolutely invaluable. Medipet knows this and also offers you pet assistance in forms of covering advertising costs for cats and dogs and even a reward payment for found dogs.
The most important thing in a situation like this is to think clearly, call the local vets for pet assistance, and find out if anyone has reported your animal as found, if not then do give the vet your information with a description of your pet in case someone is still to report them found. Pet assistance can also mean rallying up the troops and going out on a search around the neighbourhood – your pet may just have wondered off down a nearby street and pet assistance from family or neighbours they can soon be home again.

When talking to pet owners there are a few pet assistance questions that are clearly areas of concern and interest to many pet owners. Some of the more common pet assistance questions include what the best foods are to feed animals, how often to bath domestic animals and there are usually abounding questions regarding animal health interests and medical concerns.
Regarding pet assistance with the right foods to feed your pet your vet would be the best person to speak to. Your vet will be able to identify the specific dietary needs of your animal and can then suggest the best food or foods to be feeding your animal that will greatly contribute to their overall health. Again, when it comes to pet assistance questions to do with your animal’s health your vet would be the best and most reliable source. But when it comes to pat assistance questions around medical issues there are a few options open to you.

Pet Assistance is closer than you think!
Pet assistance comes in a range of forms and stretches from assistance in areas of house training, puppy training and health and medical related matters. If you have a new puppy and are looking for advice on integrating them into your household or if you are looking for information about what your cat or dog should be eating the best thing to do is to ask someone who is experienced and knowledgeable about the particularities of pets.
Ideally your vet would be the best person to go to for reliable pet assistance.
Pet assistance is often something that involves little questions and is about things that you do not necessarily want to run off to your vet to ask. So when you have a little concern or are just looking for an opinion and some good advice you can also send our Medipet team a question.
Medipet also has a vet nurse on standby to answer to any of your emailed questions.
So if you do need some pet assistance or have any questions regarding your animal, their health or pet insurance do not hesitate to send the Medipet blog team an email. And for more pet insurance specific advice take a look at the Medipet website at www.medipetsa.co.za and send Medipet a direct email to ask about their pet insurance offers.

Important Pet Assistance
Pet assistance is something that all of us loving pet owners need at some stage. Whether we need assistance with our own pets, if we want to help out a neighbour or if we have found a stray animal, it is good to know who and where to go to for good and reliable pet assistance. We must also remember that as much as we may at times need assistance with our animals the organisations that offer their services can very often also do with our help.
In South Africa there are a number of reliable places and caring people that offer pet assistance services. In Cape Town there is the Cat Assistance Team (CAT) that looks after cats in and around Pollsmoor and aims to give care to the feral cats in the Cape Town area. There is also The Emma Animal Rescue Society (TEARS), which accommodates and looks after stray and injured animals. There is the South African Mass Animal Sterilization Trust (SAMAST) which aims to provide and fund sterilization services in disadvantaged areas and there is of course the well known SPCA which is a long standing organisation that strives to make the lives of animals and pet owners the best that it possibly can by offering its pet assistance services. Look after your pet when you invest in your very own pet insurance policy from MediPet.
